More features....

Sometimes, it’s just about the music.  Other times, music serves to complete  other pleasures.  Or vice versa.

That said, it stands to reason this site should offer reviews and suggestions for  those singular pleasures,  enjoyed more fully with, well, you know.

I am fortunate to have available a few of the best writers on the subject of good music, good books and good movies.  It’s a natural fit.

Critiques, reviews, interviews and  random commentary will be featured regularly.  I may or may not open these up for comments.  Click on the Featured Columns page to enjoy voices from around the country speak to the simple pleasures.  Let me know what you think.

Revealed Truths   will be a regular column by music authority Michael Bell.  Well known in circles around the country for his expertise on all things music, Bell is a self-taught master with  knowledge and insight into  the  music that represents and has shaped and changed  an entire generation.

His world-travel and obsession for live-concerts in every venue, state and as many countries as possible  may have influenced his remarkable ability to hear vague  nuance and veiled meanings in a generation of rock and roll.  Those who are most familiar with Bell suspect something a little deeper.

His Midwest roots factor into this quiet but deep and certain passion and on a particular, mostly lucky night in a small town in Kansas, a night sometime in February of 1964, one of Bell’s most profound love affairs began.

Waiting as usual for his parents to settle in for an evening of television, he slipped into his usual spot in the  dark hallway just outside his bedroom, (where he was supposed to be tucked-in and sleeping*), flattened against the wall and out of sight,  he watched the black-and-white TV around the backs of  his twenty-nine year old parent’s heads.  Bell did not know then that his already developing  fascination with music would change forever just seconds later when  Ed Sullivan introduced George, John, Ringo and Paul for the first time on American soil.   Bell would never be the same.  The rest, as they say, is history.

You may agree or disagree with his perspective.  You may even think you know more about music.   Or you may just learn a thing or two.

*Rumor has it that Bell’s much more obedient and  less appreciated  younger  sister spied him in the hallway that night.  Adamant that his shenanigans be  rightfully  exposed, she repeatedly coughed and cleared her throat in hopes of a quick and extremely painful capture of the sneaky culprit in the hall.  As oft was the case back in the day,  her attempts failed and he snuck safely, although changed, back to bed.   (It's very likely she took a beating for her efforts  at a later time).

SEPTEMBER 2009

Oh, Look Out…

Wherein I explain why you must, this very minute, add “The Beatles: Re-mastered” to your collection
I get it.  I really  do.  You fancy yourself a huge Beatles fan.  You can sing along with every song in the catalog, except for those obscure, pre-Rubber Soul ones.  You dutifully purchased all the post-breakup compilations; Past Masters (yes, both volumes), Live at the BBC, maybe a couple of the Anthology records (Free as a Bird, yeah, yeah, yeah!).  You gave “1” to a favorite niece for Christmas, and you listened to the Love album with caution and trepidation, ready to heap scorn on the blasphemers who dared interfere with the primary arrangements.  Then you marched yourself out to Vegas and wept through the Cirque du Soleil fantasia.  And now, you find The Fabs at the top of the charts again, 40 years after the release of Let It Be, with their Re-mastered Mono and Stereo box sets.  Is there really anything new here?
..... In a not-nearly strong enough word, yes, yes, yes and yes.  What we have here, for the first time, is the digital re-mastering of the entire, original, Beatles catalog, as released in the UK.  Its release, on 09-09-09, coincided with the release of, "The Beatles: Rock Band" video game. Each of the CDs is packaged with replicated original UK album art, including expanded booklets containing original and newly written liner notes and rare photos. Each CD is also embedded with a QuickTime mini-documentary film about the album.  These can be purchased as individual CDs, or in two distinct boxed sets.

The collection comprises all 12 Beatles albums in stereo, with track listings and artwork as originally released in the UK.  In addition, Past Masters Vol. I and II are now combined as one title, for a total of 16 titles over 14 discs including, Yellow Submarine. This will be the first time that the first four Beatles albums will be available in stereo in their entirety on compact disc.
